http://fluxmag.com/lifestyle/truth-brings-coffee-in-its-simplest-form-to-va-waterfront/

It is a universal truth that coffee is a fine beverage to have at anytime of the day. Business deals and casual meetings are made over a cup of espresso or cappuccino, breakfast is not the same without it, and it’s a better alternative to have a coffee break outside at work than by the water cooler.

Some consumers are happy with the crumbling granules of instant coffee. But there are others that know the difference between Mocca Java and Costa Rica; the correct way to drink and savour a single espresso; how the coarseness of ground beans affects the taste of the coffee.

In short, they are aficionados, and self-confessed coffee guru and entrepreneur David Donde has answered their prayers of serving up coffee in its simplest, elegant form.

The answer: TRUTH. coffeecult.

After many years of dabbling in different fields, Capetonian Donde decided at the end of 2009 to combine his passion for coffee and business by embarking on a new venture producing his own exquisite tasting coffee. Cape Town welcomed Truth. coffeecult.

TRUTH. in essence, is a coffee roaster. Using artisanal processes, TRUTH. takes the best green coffee growers from around the world and establishes a sustainable buying relationship with them. Each coffee is then roasted to its optimum and five blends are created. The characteristics and terroir of each coffee is preserved. TRUTH. further ensures that their baristas include proper preparation and effective training, resulting in comprehensive understanding, and delivering coffee that surpasses everything you think you know about it.

Donde initially set up his specialist café at the Prestwich Memorial, Greenpoint, and has now expanded his coffeecult by opening a new TRUTH. Coffee Roasting Depot at the V&A Waterfront.

Situated on Dock Road near Mitchell’s Brewery and Vaughan Johnson, the Depot is an espresso bar serving signature flat whites, espressos, filter coffees, iced coffee slush, a select variety of sandwiches and snacks, and of course, world-renowned TRUTH. coffeecult artisan roasted coffee beans.

An advanced water filtration and a state of the art Nuova Simonelli Espresso machine (which is the current World Barista Championship model) has been installed to get the best from TRUTH’s amazingly complex coffee beans.

TRUTH. coffee is founded on a few ideals: quality above all else; strong coffee that is not bitter; sustainability; continuous learning; and most importantly, the fundamental belief that coffee in the cup can deliver on the promise made by the magnificent aroma of freshly ground beans.

“Great coffee is a process, not a destination,” says Donde.

TRUTH.

January 25, 2010 · 2 Comments

Anyone in Cape Town that knows good coffee knows David Donde. He was a founding partner and the main voice for Origin, the coffee shop that really and truly first introduced good, freshly roasted coffee to Cape Town. He also writes car reviews. And does a late night radio talk show (too much caffeine?). And blogs. And tweets. And basically is a very proficient one-man noisemaker for whatever he chooses to make noise about.

I popped into his new place, TRUTH. coffeecult, last week for a caffeine fix and yes, let me tell you what you had already guessed: the coffee is freaking amazing. Yup, he’s bringing in some awesome beans and roasting them with added teaspoons of crack or something because that little shot of dark is so damned tasty, well… I mean, it’s just so damned good there must be something in there besides coffee! No? Okay, there isn’t, and it’s tribute to the man and his bean obsession (hence the name of the store) that he can produce such good stuff.

At TRUTH you can buy a variety of industrially-packaged roasted beans with names like Resurrection Blend or Donde’s Chaos. Antithesis, is the best-named one in my book, since being caffeine-free is really in direct opposition to the idea of coffee. At least to me. The idea of caffeine-free coffee rates way up there with non-alcoholic beer or a caesar salad without bacon on the ‘Why the Hell?!’ list. TRUTH also serves basic food options (the pita burgers are quite tasty) but the focus here is clearly on the coffee. As it should be.

I drank and espresso and a flat white, made with the Resurrection Blend, and both were outstanding though the flat white whipped butt. The only criticism I can provide of the place is the place itself. Amazing coffee, but TRUTH is a bit ‘arb’ in its design (or lack of it? though the sustainable feel is commendable) and attachment to what must be Cape Town’s most random memorial (Prestwich Memorial, made as a sort of ‘tax’ by developers so they could continue their property development a few blocks away). Music selection and volume could help but at the moment it is a little soul-less, something ironic and at odds with the evangelical force Donde is himself.

TRUTH. coffeecult. Definitely go here for your caffeine fix. More than once.

Truth Coffee launch

Jan.20, 2010 in Launches

Finally an answer to the question that is on everyone’s lips: What’s the difference between a cappuccino and a flat white? You will hear all sorts of answers to that question but few people are as qualified to answer it as David Donde. Cape Town coffee aficionados will be familiar with Origin coffee and those in the know will be aware that David Donde was the man responsible for establishing that brand.

He has since moved on and started his own coffee distribution enterprise with a coffee shop where people can drink his carefully selected blends and purchase coffee for home use. Truth. Coffee Cult, on the corner of Buitengracht and Somerset Road (in the Prestwich Memorial building), has only been open a few days and the news of a fresh (pardon the pun) coffee option is spreading.

I popped in the other day to check it out and have a chat with David about his concept. He felt that Origin over complicated coffee, with a multitude of blends from a plethora of countries, roasted in various ways. People were getting confused and overwhelmed by the options. At Truth he has simplified everything, offering the customer the result if his years of experience and skill in a small selection of coffee. With five freshly roasted blends to choose from, a patron can select a blend to take home with minimal fuss. One is organic and one decaf, the rest suited to various palates.

Being situated in the monument, makes Truth very different from your average coffee shop. It creates an unusual atmosphere inside but the highlight is the outside area. Shaded by a combination of trees and umbrellas, this al fresco area is surprising quiet and the grassy sections give it the feel of an inner city oasis. An early morning coffee, in the shade of a tree is the most calming way to imbibe your daily caffeine fix.

Because the place is so new, the food offering is still taking shape. They offer small snacks at reasonable prices for those needing to quieten hunger pangs. Parking should be a nightmare but they have secured two bays in the public parking over the road as well as another four in the church next door.

Truth. Coffee Cult is not your average coffee shop, it’s a Cape Town coffee shop.

To answer the question, a flat white is like a cuppuccino but without piles of foam on top. How to make one properly, now that is another question. Pop into Truth and ask David to demonstrate.
