Interesting, our hole in the wall is serving the same amount of cups of coffee per day as the v&a Waterfront store.

It takes more than one to form a queue

So we opened the window for a while this morning. We gave away a fair bit of coffee too. Word got out fast. The Bergies heard about it. They form a pretty good line at that time of morning all things considered. Then we ran out of milk. We got more fast. We had poured more than a hundred free cups! then we ran out of milk again. We got even more. then we ran out again, and it was after 11 or so, and the glass guys wanted to do their thing on our window. What a day. Loads of encouragement from the neighbourhood.

We are now charging R10 a cup take away only, till we open properly. About 5 weeks away.

Exciting times.

Our new HQ

TRUTH. has a new HQ.

Our new headquarters are on Buitenkant Street. We will be shipping coffee from there. Serving coffee too. And also roasting it in our nearly complete vintage 60kg Probat bag roaster. Serving coffee too.

We aren’t closing any other stores down, and Prestwich is business as usual.

Directions:

36 Buitenkant Street.

From the city: Come down Strand street and turn right just at the Castle onto Buitenkant. Go past the parade crossing Darling, and we are on the right immediately after Caledon Police Station.

From Gardens or De Waal Drive, Go down Roeland street, turn right into Buitenkant towards the castle and we are on your left just after the Book Lounge.

We still have office space to let above the new roastery. 2x 500 square metres at R85/m^2

Free at last! Free at last!

There it is. at last that counter started at 100 days and now look at it:

So it is time for an announcement. Or two. First off our new HQ is to be in Buitenkant Street. Secondly to celebrate that, and the end of 100 days we are going to give away the first 100 cups of coffee. Thats right, free coffee, and like our wi-fi, unconditionally.

Then things become a little more complex. As by the nature of these things some of the shopfitting hasn’t arrived yet and, well we just aren’t ready. Now while some other venues in our great city have great opening bashes only to be closed thereafter for a month or two while things arrive, we decided to be a little different.

To add insult to injury, the powers that be stuck a 5 day long weekend deliberately and without any foresight whatsoever right on the end of our countdown. It reeks of malice if you ask me.

Then some other bugger is trying to burn Africa down or something a zillion miles away, but invited half our customers, and we love you lot, so we needed to wait out this long weekend.

SO here is the deal:

Wednesday AM, we suggest you form a queue. Right outside our new front door. At 8am we will start giving away those cups. Take away only. See we won’t let you come in. Or see too much. Really we are just out to tease you.

After those free cups are given away, we will sell you coffee every weekday until we do open properly, some weeks after.

Now as to where TRUTH. house is. Bang in the Fringe Design District. We are right next door to Maverick’s (Naked coffee anyone?) Around the corner from Barrack Street on Buitenkant. Number 36 actually.

That is on the same side of the road as the fabulous Book Lounge, Cape Town’s best book store we think? It is just a bit closer down Buietnkant towards the Castle.

Roadbumps at 10

So first the little Probat, the 12kg roaster’s bean probe broke. The end fell off and then it snapped in half. These things happen after 60 years or so. So we had that repaired a week or so back. At the time we decided to make a new one and for it’s big 60kg Probat brother too. So we had two new ones made by the clever engineers who do stuff like that for us. Then we needed new handles, so off to the wood turners. The result? Art in stainless steel, brass and walnut. A happy roaster or two, too and a big smile on my face all day
