more on how much a cup of coffee is worth…

pt 2  @ follows from here

How much is a cup of coffee worth? If a cheap cup of coffee is appropriately priced @ R12, my starting assumption and we are charging R18 per double flat white. A price on a par with others calling themselves artisans. That is a 50% surcharge.

It begs the question, what is an appropriate spread from the cheapest to the best.

Lets take some other industries. Cars, flowers, wine even bloody hamburgers (I do like mine a little underdone) a mere 50% spread from cheapest to best I don’t thinks so!

On this basis too, a cup of the good stuff should exceed R25.

What of price parity? UK, EU or USA premium coffees for (at todays exchange rate)

R18 in South Africa = €1.8455402 , $2.444418 , £1.59422031

How much does a Starbucks charge?

and don’t you go thinking our cost of doing business is necessarily cheaper. While we save on labour per hour, our productivity is way lower. Similarly while our rent is lower, our rent per customer through the door is similar. This is also the major productivity issue.

Our beans certainly don’t cost any less, in fact due to quirks in transportation, often more. Cups, and equipment are similarly mostly more expensive.

R18 seems  bargain.
